Governor Culver Orders Flags Lowered Saturday to Honor Fallen Airman

Flags to be flown at half staff in honor of Capt. David Wisniewski

DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver has ordered that all flags in Iowa be flown at half staff on Saturday, July 24 from 8 a.m. until sunset in honor of Capt. David Wisniewski, formerly of Moville, Iowa, who died from injuries suffered while serving in Afghanistan. Funeral services for Capt. Wisniewski will be held at 10 a.m. on July 24 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City.

Capt. Wisniewski was a U.S. Air Force pilot assigned to the 66th Rescue Squadron, Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. He died July 2 of wounds sustained June 9 in a helicopter crash near Forward Operating Base Jackson, Afghanistan.

Capt. Wisniewski graduated from Woodbury Central High School in 1998 and the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2002. He was piloting a helicopter in a rescue mission in Afghanistan June 9 when his helicopter was shot down. Capt. Wisniewski is credited with saving numerous lives during his Air Force career.

The Governor’s directive applies to all U.S. and state flags under the control of the state. H.R. 692, signed in 2007, requires federal government agencies in the state to comply with the Governor’s Executive Order that the U.S. flag be flown at half staff in the event of the death of a member of the Armed Forces. Flags will be at half staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex, and upon all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.

The U.S. flag flown over the State Capitol on the day of Capt. Wisniewski’s funeral will be presented to his family at a later date, along with a proclamation honoring Capt. Wisniewski.
